From the Fast Lane to the Boardroom: The Power of Flow in Racing and Leadership

As a Board Member at Five To Flow, and a racing driver, I know that ‘Flow’ is a concept that both racing drivers and business leaders should embrace. I experienced it in its rawest form while racing at Silverstone earlier this season.

Just 3 weeks after the likes of Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen had raced at Silverstone in Formula 1, I competed in my 10th motor race. With 15 minutes to go I found myself in 4th place, with two much more experienced drivers on my tail, pushing me relentlessly at speeds over 135 mph. Behind us, around 10,000 spectators watched live, with another 6,000 tuned in online. My Apple watch showed my heart rate didn't drop below 180 beats per minute for the whole race.

But I was calm, unaware of all of this— at one with my car I was immersed in the rhythm of the race.

Our battle was so intense that three more cars caught up, turning the battle into a high-speed chess match between 6 drivers, on one of the most iconic circuits in the world. In those moments, everything came down to trust: in my car, my preparation, and my ability to adapt under pressure. When the checkered flag fell, I held onto 4th place by just 0.04 seconds, with five cars separated by less than 2 seconds.

That result—the second-best ever for a ‘Sportsman’ in the championship—was only possible because I’d found my flow. Flow is more than a buzzword. On the track, it’s the alignment of instinct, skill, and focus, allowing drivers to reach new levels of performance. In business, it’s the harmony of people, culture, processes, and tools, allowing teams to perform at their best under pressure. Like in racing, businesses face moments of intense competition and rapid decision-making.

Flow empowers leaders and teams to stay composed, trust their preparation, and seize opportunities even when the stakes feel overwhelming. Whether you’re leading a company or navigating the fast lane at Silverstone, flow is the key to achieving greatness. Align your team. Trust the process. And find your rhythm—because extraordinary results await when every element moves as one.
